No. 14 “That’s a dark pattern.”
Translation
it tricks people into it.
A dark pattern is a screen built to trick you: a giant “Stay!” button & a tiny grey cancel link.
It works once. Then people stop trusting you.
Try this
Make “no” as easy to find as “yes.”
Where it comes from
In 2010, UX designer Harry Brignull registered darkpatterns.org to name the tricks some screens play on people.
His names stuck, like the roach motel: easy to get in, hard to get out.
Today laws in the EU & California ban some of them.
- Harry Brignull, darkpatterns.org (2010), now deceptive.design
- Harry Brignull, Deceptive Patterns (2023)
Save this
Save this for the next time someone asks to make “cancel” smaller.
